A series of protests and riots began in Chile in October 2019, following the announcement of an increase in the metro fare in Chile's capital, Santiago[1]. For several months, a large amount of public infrastructure and commercial buildings were vandalized, looted or burned in Santiago and elsewhere in the country.
In response to the unrest, the government deployed soldiers and imposed a curfew in a number of cities[2]. Many people were arrested and sentenced to years in prison.
